This Measuring tool is a Headspace Micrometer for Riflesmiths .I call it the Precision Riflesmiths delight, due to it's attributes.The conventional method of headspace measuring is using a regular depth micrometer,which is accurate when it has solid suport on both "wings" (lands) In the case of this old depth micrometer it sits on a small surface,that is headspace gauge,and the measuring pin extends down onto the end of barrel stub,to take the measurment.The only problem here is that the Headspace gauge is looselyfit in the chamber as all gunsmiths know,and can cant a little to the sides,this can give error of 0.05-0.10 mm.This "Riflesmith's Delight" is designed with a different land as the photos show. It is round and sits solidly on the barrel end and cannot cant to side,plus it's measuring depth pin contacts the headspace gauge on CENTER.This tool gives constant,accurate measurments all the time.

The second attribute of this tool is to make up a enlarged version as shown here, to measure the whole length, of barrel stub to the end of headspace gauge. By doing this, the accuracy of the total measurement is even better. This speeds up the measuring process and gives more constant results. Gunsmiths don't have to rely on the old type of depth micrometer.
Measurements with as small error as possible are very important,in building the most accurate Bench Rest and competition rifles,and varmint rifles today.
As everyone knows the Bench Rest Riflesmiths are setting the standards in gunsmithing all over the globe today. And should be given the credits they deserve,but seldom get.
